SUPPOSED DROWNING. The Water Police were engaged last evening dragging for the body of Maud Bulmer, 17, a nursegirl, who is believed to have been drowned off Woollahra Point yesterday after noon. She was employed by Mrs. James, of Woollahra Point. The residence has a water frontage, and at the end there is a pontoon, to which a fish-trap was attached. The girl went to the pontoon about 4.30 p.m., and it is surmised that she fell into the water while attempting to raise the trap. As the girl did not return the police were informed. Dragging operations were unsuccessful, but the work will be resumed this morning. Sydney Morning Herald 7/3/1905

NURSEGIRL DROWNED. The Woollahra Point Fatality, The Acting-City Coroner this morning made inquiry into the drowning of Maud Bulmer, a nurseglrl, who was in the service of Mr. James, of "Altona." Woollahra Point, and whose body was yesterday recovered by the Water Police.

An aunt of the girl gave evidence that the deceased-was an orphan- and a State school girl.

Mr. James stated that on Monday afternoon the girl was given permission to go down to the boat shed to see if there were any fish In the fishtrap that is sunk there. As she did not return to her duties after the lapse of some time a search was made for her about the grounds, but she was nowhere to be seen. The police were then communicated with,. Senior-constable Bultitude deposed to the recovery of the body.

A verdict of accidentally drowned was recorded.

The girl was an orphan, 14 1/2 years of age, a native of Taree, and had been apprenticed from the Randwick Asylum to Mrs. A. J. James, of 'Altona,' 'Woollahra Point. On the date in question, she asked her mistress, with whom she bad been for three and a half years, if she might go and look at a fishtrap at the boathouse. Permission was granted, and she did not return. The trap was fastened by a rope to a pontoon, and had not been moved. The girl was in the habit of going to look at the fish trap, but there was no danger there. The medical evidence went to show that death was due to asphyxia by drowning. Evening News 9/3/1905.
