Ann was born in 1847[1] in Goole, Yorkshire, England, where she lived with her parents, William and Sarah, in 1851[2] and 1861.[3]
Ann married John Longhorn in Snaith in 1868;[4][5] the family lived in Hook, Yorkshire. John was a commercial clerk in 1871[6] and later a merchant's clerk.[7]
At the time of the 1891 census, the family lived at 31 Marks Terrace, Hook, and John worked as a "check weighman" at the port of Goole.[8] In 1901 he was a dock labourer.[9]
The family had moved to 2 Western Terrace, Lower Wortley, Yorkshire (a house with only three habitable rooms) by 1911. At the time of the census, John was an unemployed ship weighman.[10]
