James was born to John Bumpas in 1678; he was baptised in Scituate on June 16.[1] He married Mary Savery at Sandwich in 1702[2] and they had at least four children together.[3]

He died intestate and on 27 September 1727, his brother Isaac Bumpus of Rochester was granted the letter of administration for his estate.[4]
His inventory was taken on 4 October 1727 in Rochester.[5]
In 1729, his estate was divided and distribution was set out to his widow, Margery, and his children, Ebenezer (eldest son), Zaccheus, Samuel, and Martha.[6]
