Biography

Robin Bumpass (see research note regarding the first name) was born in about 1784[1] in Halifax County, North Carolina[2], the first child of Samuel Bumpass Sr. (abt.1763-abt.1831) and Jemimah (maiden name unknown) Bumpass[3]. Robin was a farmer[1][4] and was a private in the Tennessee Militia during the war of 1812[5].

Robin married his first wife (name, date and place unknown - see research note regarding spouses) sometime before 1820[6][7]. The first wife must have died between 1830 and 1835[5]. There is no evidence of any children from this first marriage[6][7]. Robert then married Mary Ann Rose, known as Polly, in Sep 1835 in Montgomery County, Tennessee[5]. The couple had at least four children[1][4][8][9].

Robert died 13 Feb 1871 in Montgomery County, Tennessee[5]. Polly went to live with her son William[10] and is believed to have lived to the age of 82.

Research Notes

  • This profile, as originally created, was horribly conflated between Samuel Bumpass Jr. (aft.1790-abt.1836) and Samuel's older brother Robert (or Robin) Bumpus.
The wife (Elizabeth Albryghte) and two children ( Andrew Jackson Sr. and his sister Sarah Ann Bumpus) belonged to Samuel Bumpass Jr.
The date of birth was a rough estimate of the year of birth of Robert Bumpass. (the date is difficult to document).
The place of birth (North Carolina) was correct for both brothers however they were not born in Cumberland County but rather Halifax County. Cumberland County was probable for both brothers but unsourced. Cape Fear River runs through Cumberland County.
The date of death was correct for Robert.
The place of death (Cape Fear River, Cumberland, North Carolina) was unsourced and highly unlikely for either brother.
  • This profile has been repurposed to be correct for Robin (or Robert) Bumpass, born in the 1780s, son of Samuel Bumpass Sr. and brother of Samuel Bumpass Jr. The inaccessible source material originally provided in this profile has been removed and replaced with freely available sources.
  • Do not confuse this Robert Bumpass with his grandfather.
  • The fist name is given as either Robin/Robbin[3][9] or Robert[5][8][6][7][11][1][4]. Robin has been used as it is the name his father called him in the father's will. However, he seems to have self-identified to census takers and as executor of his father's estate as "Robert" so his 'known-as' name has been set to Robert.
  • Other spouses of Robin and Polly :  There is ample evidence that Polly was not the first wife of Robert Bumpass, though definitive proof of whom this first wife might have been is lacking.  The 1920 and 1930 censuses[6][7] show that Robert shared his household with a female born between ~1795 and ~1800, apparently without children (or children did not live very long).  This woman cannot be Polly as Polly was not that old.  The war pension record[5] shows that Robert and Polly married in Sep 1835 and the 1840 census[11] shows that Robert shared his household with a woman born between ~1811 and ~1820 (which is consistent with with what we know about Polly).  The pension record shows that the maiden name of the widow was "Mary - first marriage Sykes".  This is hard to interpret.  Another genealogy web site has interpreted this to mean that Polly was, previous to her marriage to Robert, married to a man named "Sykes" (i.e. Sykes was Polly's married name) and have identified him as Lumsford Sykes and have offered as proof for this assertion the probate records of Lundsford or Sasford Sykes who died in late 1831 or early Jan 1832.  These records can be found in the FamilySearch catalog in the Montgomery County, Tennessee probate records, Vol F pages 308 (executor bond) and 348 (estate inventory).  The executor bond indicates that Lunsford died intestate but neither document mentions any wife or other beneficiaries.  Another way to interpret the pension record would be that Mary Sykes was the first wife of Robert (i.e. Sykes was the maiden name) and was his wife when he first enlisted in 1814 but this interpretation has been rejected based on circumstantial evidence as follows.  Polly would have been about 25 years old in 1835 at the time of her marriage to Robert.  At this age it is completely plausible that she might have had a husband prior to her marriage to Robert.  So it has been assumed that her real first name was Mary and she was married to someone named Sykes prior to her marriage to Robert and that the "James W. Likes" (age 17) listed in the 1850 census[1] is Polly's child from her first marriage.  The child was also shown in the 1840 census[11] as male age 5 to 9, i. e. born before the 1835 marriage of Robert and Polly.  Whether the last name was "Likes" or "Sykes" has still to be researched.
  • The maiden name of Robert's second wife is believed to be Mary Ann Rose, known as Polly.  Mary as per the research note just above and the 1880 census[10], Ann per the death certificate of Polly's daughter[9], Rose per the death certificates of daughter Mary Ann[9] and son William[8], and Polly from all other sources.
  • The 1850 census[1] is misindexed. The family name is written "Bumpass" but has been indexed as "Burnpass". See the image (at maximum magnification).
  • The 1830 census for Montgomery County has, for unknown reasons, been partially alphabetized (e.g. all the heads of household with family name starting with the letter 'B' are listed together. So adjacent entries are not necessarily neighbors. However all families with the "Bumpass" name are listed close to each other. Brothers John Sr. (line 2), Robin/Robert (line 7) and Tompkins (line 3) are on image 5. Samuel Sr. (line 8) is on image 9. Brother Samuel Jr. (line 13) is on image 15.
