Biography

James Calvin Bunch (1841-1862) contracted typhoid fever while in the Confederate Army and was placed in a hospital in Petersburg, Virginia. His mother, Lavinia McQuiston Johnson, upon learning of the seriousness of his condition, rode horseback alone from her home in Guilford County, North Carolina to Petersburg, Virginia, a distance of more than 150 miles to visit him and help take care of him, as army hospitals then afforded little nursing care. He died while she was there. It is not known where he is buried.

Roll of Honor
James Bunch Died in Military Service .

His Mother Jane McQuiston Johnson (1810-1894) was the daughter of James and Lavinia Johnson. Her father, James Johnson, was born in Guilford County, North Carolina on August 26, 1773 and died March 22, 1846. Her mother, Lavinia McQuiston, was the daughter of Walter McQuiston and was born in Guilford County, North Carolina on April 1, 1779 and died October 9, 1818. Jane McQuiston Johnson was a well educated person for her day. She was also a talented and industrious person. It is believed that prior to her coming into the family this line of the Bunches had very limited education. She taught her children, because at that time there were few, if any, public schools; however, some of her children did attend Oak Ridge Institute, a private school established in 1850 at Oak Ridge, North Carolina, only about four miles from the Bunch farm. Throughout the lives of her children it was evident that they had received splendid training in their adolescence. For further information concerning her see individual comment of her son James Calvin Bunch on page 11 herein.
