Biography

John Bundy was born in England in about 1617. The names of his parents and the precise place where he was born are unknown.[1]

He immigrated to New England in 1635, settling in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony. On March 14, 1635, John Bundy bound himself for eight years as an indentured servant to Griffin Mountegue who was a carpenter. On March 6, 1636/7 John ageed to the remainder of the indenture being transfered to William Brewster, the Elder of Plymouth. While serving his endenture, on August 21, 1637, "John Bundy was examined and found guilty of lewd behavior and uncivil carriage towards Elizabeth Haybell, in the house of her master, Mr. Will[ia]m Brewster, and is therefore adjudged to be severely whipped, which was executed upon him accordingly."[2]Later on January 8, 1638/9, John's indenture was transfered to Brewster's son Jonathan for the residue of his term "which is five years from fourteenth of March next."[1]

The name of John Bundy is found as a man able to bear arms in the Plymouth section of the 1643 Plymouth Colony list.[3]He served for seventeen days in the Narragansett campaign in August 1645.[1]

By 1649 John was in Boston where he married Martha Chandler, daughter of Roger Chandler[4]and his wife Isabella (Chilton) Chandler.[5]The marriage had been promoted by his aunt Susanna Alley and her husband, Phillip Alley. The couple had promised to give their Boston estate to John and Martha. When Philip Alley died, his widow did not include John Bundy in her will. So on May 31, 1671, John Bundy sued the Alley estate for the property, saying to the court: "your poor petitioner diverse years since was an inhabitant in the town of Boston having only one relation in the country viz: one own aunt who was the wife of Mr. Phillip Alley deceased."[1]Bundy argued that Phillip Alley and his wife Susanna "in consideration of good affection and kindred" them both had given to John Bundy "to possess and enjoy from & immediately after the decease of the said Philip & Susanna Alley the Uncle and Aunt of saide Bundy..." "...dated. Novembr 19th 1672 . . .The Jury . . .founde for the Defendant cost of Court."[6]

John Bundy and his wife were living in Taunton by 1662 where on June 3, 1662 his name was listed last of "sundry ancient freemen of the town of Taunton" who previously had been given permission "to look out lands for their accommodation." They were now granted land on the northern bounds of Taunton. Then on October 3, 1665 in Taunton, his wife Martha and her two sisters (the daughters of Roger Chandler, deceased) were each granted fifty acres of land, ... "... according to the desire of John Bundey." Martha (Chandler) Bundy died in Taunton on May 1, 1674.[7][1][8]

John married (2nd) to the widow Ruth (Unknown) Gurney at Taunton on January 9, 1676. She had previouisly been married to John Gurney of Mendon.[1]

John Bundy died between the time he wrote his will, April 1681 and the date it was probated, October 29, 1681. He was aged sixty four, sick and weak at its writing. His house and land he bequesthed to his "loving wife during her widowhood; all the moveables within and without. John willed that 50 acres of land in the North Purchase be sold, with the proceeds to go to his wife; the rest of the land there was bequeathed to his son James Bundy. John's land at John [Linkern's] was bequeathed "to the sons I have by this wife."[5] The inventory of the estate was taken on October 29, 1681 and totalled L17 of which L16 was real estate.[1][9]

Ruth Gurney Bundy married (3rd) to Guido Bailey.[1]

Research Notes

  • Of John Bundy's indenture, Robert Charles Anderson questioned whether the indenture was executed in England or New England; since the paperwork for the original indenture has not been found. Anderson says that Mountague was probably in New England by 1634, so it is assumed that John Bundy had arrived by 1635. If however Bundy signed his apprenticeship in England, he may not have arrived in New England until 1636.[1]
  • Regarding the last name at birth of John Bundy's second wife, Rachel, Alicia Crane Williams in "Early New England Families", profile of Guido Bayley, styles her name as "Ruth ([Rachel/Ratchell/Retchell?])[15]There is a note on her profile Ruth (Ratchelle) Bailey indicating that "Mayflower Families" has her name as Ruth Ratchell with a (?) next to it.
  • Martha Chandler, John Bundy's first wife was a descendant of James Chilton, of Mayflower fame, through her mother Isabella (Chilton) Chandler.[16]
  • Elizabeth Haybell, with whom John Bundy was found guilty of lewd behavior, is found in "The Great Migration Directory" on page 156. As yet I don't believe she had a profile on WikiTree. If a profile is created, she will be eligible to be in the PGM project.[2]

Here is a primary source ("Records of the Suffolk County Court, 1671-1680" Vol. 29) that calls John Bundy "the Sister's son of Susanna the then wife of the saide Phillip (Alley)": https://books.google.com/books?id=UxDVAAAAMAAJ&q=philip+alley+susanna&dq=philip+alley+susanna&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjFuN_DrpngAhUQvKwKHdLKD7QQ6AEITjAG

He gives a lot of speculation re: John Bundy so those sources will need to be checked.

Cheryl, the source for his mother is found on her profile. It is a work published in 2015 and the author gives his sources. He appears to have consulted Anderson so his sources may have been found after Anderson's work. I did a quick look but I did not review his sources.

Please, what is the source for the mother of John Bundy?

We need a legitimate, scholarly source otherwise she should be disconnected with appropriate notes in the profiles affected.

Mother is not in GM.
