Biography

Benjamin Bundy, the sixth child of John Bundy and Elizabeth Keaton, b. 12-12-1729, m. Ruth Jennings and was dismissed for marrying "not in our society." On 8th of 7mo. 1754 Friends reported that Benjamin Bundy has joined in marriage with a young woman of our society. Thomas Nicholson and Joseph Robinson were appointed to investigate. Case continued on 3rd of 8th mo. 1754 to next meeting, but on 6th of 9th mo. 1754 Joseph Pritchard and Joseph Scott were appointed to prepare a paper of disunity against Benjamin Bundy and bring it to next meeting. On 3rd of 10th mo. 1754 Benjamin Bundy was sent the paper of disunity. His wife was not named.

Benjamin administered his brother William's estate after William's death 1759-60.

Benjamin was bequeathed property from father-in-law John Jennings, probated in 1752 and concluded 1759.

Probate documents filed in March 1810 name Sarah Bundy as his widow.

1790 census shows Sarah and her 2 children (one female unknown age and one male under the age of 16) residing with Benjamin in estimating marriage date.

The Benjamin Bundy who married Sarah Bell in 1785 is explicitly identified as the son of Caleb. Their children, born from 1787 through 1807, and Benjamin’s death in 1810, immediately follow (Symonds Creek Monthly Meeting, Vol. 2, pp. 162-163). The Benjamin Bundy who was born on 12 Dec 1729 is explicitly identified as the son of John (Symonds Creek Monthly Meeting, Vol. 1, p. 4). Ruth Bundy, widow of Benjamin, headed a household in the 1769 Pasquotank tax list and was living as late as the 1791 Pasquotank Tax List, District 1. The Benajmin Bundy born in 1729 to John is not the Benjamin who died in 1810.

Benjamin Bundy was excluded from the Soc. of Friends Symonds Monthly Meeting for marrying outside the religion in 1754 (pp. 352-353). The births of his children and his death are not to be found in Quaker records. The Pasquotank County Court Minutes for 13 October 1767 record the Isaac Jennings replaced Benjamin Bundy decd as overseer of a road (p.37). Note that on subsequent tax lists Ruth, not Benjamin, is head of the household.
