Biography

Rebecca Bundy was probably born about 1803 in the parish of Renhold, Bedfordshire, England.

Rebecca married Henry Cross on 10 March 1830 at St Michael, East Wickham, Kent, England.[1][2]

Rebecca and Henry had ten known children:

  1. John Cross (abt.1831-abt.1906) born about 1831 in Foots Cray, Kent, England, who lived with his paternal aunt, Mary Letchford, in Kent in 1841 and 1851, married Louisa Susanna Colegate) there and lived in Kent for the rest of his life;
  2. Elizabeth Cross (1832–1899) baptised 11 November 1832 in Chislehurst, Kent, England, who lived with her paternal aunt, Mary Letchford, in Kent in 1851, married William Hinchcliffe Letchford there and lived in Kent for the rest of her life;
  3. William Cross (1834–1850) born 4 January 1834 in Shipdham, Mitford, Norfolk, England, buried 7 June 1850 in Shipdham,
  4. Henry 'Harry' Cross (1835–1917) born 9 September 1835 in Shipdham, married Emma Jolly (requires further research),
  5. Mary Cross (1837–1850) born 3 January 1837 in Shipdham, buried 21 July 1850 in Shipdham,
  6. Sarah Cross (1840–1850) born 1 April 1840 in Shipdham, buried 13 August 1850 in Shipdham,
  7. Richard Cross (1841–1901) born 11 June 1841 in Shipdham, moved to Kent, married Mary Ann Cox, lived in Bermondsey,
  8. James Cross (1843–1909) born 13 April 1843 in Shipdham, moved to London, married Ann, lived in Kent and Essex,
  9. Sophia Cross (1843–1891) born 13 April 1843 in Shipdham, married Thomas Geldart in 1873 and moved to County Durham, and
  10. Ann Cross born 24 January 1847 in Shipdham, married Robert Youngs in 1875 and remained in Shipdham.

At the time of the 1841 census Rebecca, aged 35, lived at Coote's Yard, Shipdham, with husband Henry and their children Elizabeth, Henry, Mary and Sarah. Son John was living with Henry's sister Mary in Kent and son William was also absent.[3]

In the 1851 census Rebecca, aged 46, lived on White Horse Street, Shipdham, with husband Henry, whose occupation was given as 'agricultural labourer'. Five of their children also lived in the household: Henry (also an agricultural labourer), and Richard, Sophia, James and Ann, who were all at school. Son John and daughter Elizabeth were living with Henry's sister Mary in Kent. William, Mary and Sarah had died the previous year, presumably in an epidemic.[4]

The 1861 census shows Rebecca, aged 56, still lived on White Horse Street, Shipdham, with husband Henry (occupation: agricultural labourer), as well as children Richard (occupation: bricklayer's labourer), James (occupation: shoemaker's apprentice) and Ann, who was still at school. The older children had married and Sophia was living away from home, working as a domestic servant.[5]

The 1871 census had Rebecca, aged 69, and husband Henry (occupation: farm labourer) living in Shipdham with just their daughter Ann, who was working as a dressmaker and may have stayed at home to look after them as the older siblings left. Richard had married in 1865 and James had gone to London to work as a boot maker.[6]

Rebecca died in Shipdham aged 71 and was buried there on 29 April 1874.[7][8]

Research Notes

  • Rebecca's age was given reasonably consistently across censuses and roughly agreed with the age given at death, giving a birth year of between 1800 and 1805, with around 1803 seeming most likely.
  • The 1871 census gives Rebecca's place of origin as 'Rennall' in Bedfordshire, and the only remotely similarly-named place in that county is Renhold, but this might have been the place she remembered growing up rather than her actual place of birth.
  • Rebecca's surname was spelled 'Buntay' on the marriage records, presumably because her Bedfordshire pronunciation was understood differently in Kent where she married.
