Biography

Little is known of Marietta Bunker Rand. She was born around 1810 (between 1806 and 1815), possibly in Canada,[1] and likely married around 1831 to Benjamin S Rand (abt.1814-1889), based on the birth of her son William in 1832 in LaColle, Lower Canada. [2] The family moved from LaColle to Plattsburgh, New York in 1835 where the rest of her children were born.[3] Her son Henry was born in 1842 in Clinton County, New York,[4] so we know that she lived at least until then.

Research Notes

  • The History of Dodge County states that William Rand's mother was Marietta Bunker and that he had been born in Lacolle, Quebec. So Marietta must have been living there in 1832. As he was a first child she could have been born between 1806 and 1815.
  • There is a 1825 cenus record for an Isaac Bunker family in Shefford, Richelieu, Quebec (settled in 1795) as well as a Thomas S Bunker household.
Isaac's family was of 4: one married male aged 40-60, one married female aged 14-45, one single female aged 6-14, and one single female aged 14-18.
Thomas S's family was of 2: one married male aged 18-25 and 1 married female aged 14-45 [5] Could Marietta be the 14-18 year old female in the Isaac Bunker household?Schweger-2 04:01, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
  • The 1831 census record for Isaac Bunker shows his household no longer has one of the females. Is this because Marietta married?[6] There are other Bunker households in Lower Canada in the 1831 census:
Thomas Bunker again, but now with 4 children so this cannot be Marietta.[7]
Eben Bunker with a household of 10.[8]
The household of F. Bunker is a married couple so it cannot be Marietta.[9]
and the final household is a single male.[10]
  • Benjamin's daughter who died in 1848 in Saranac, New York, was stated as being the child of his wife L. Rand (Louisa) on her headstone so we know that he was not married to Marietta from at least 1847 onwards.[11]
  • The 1850 census for Benjamin's family lists his children, first his four older sons, then daughter Elizabeth, and then son James aged 5. This separation of James from the other sons could imply that James is a son from his "second family".[12] If this means that James is the first child of Louisa and Benjmim then they would have been married about 1844, so Marietta would have died between the birth of Henry in 1842 and the marriage of Benjamin aroung 1844.
