Littleberry Bunn (Burne) was will land by his father Benjamin. Will reads . . "all the land on the west side of Moccasin Creek that I hant willed away, the place where Pitchford Massey family lived, one negro woman Chins and 2 negro boys by the name of Mack & Jack." Berry also owned property (60 acres) in Franklin Co., NC, that he purchased from William Harrison (Deed Book 23, p. 21).

Berry had an illegitimate son. The marriage certificate of Burton Hicks, Franklin Co., NC, indicates that his parents are Berry Bunn and Betsy Hicks. It is unclear as to whether Berry is the father of Eliza J. Bunn and William Floyd Bunn since he died in 1841 and the 1850 census for Rowan Co., NC, indicates that Eliza was born about 1842 and William was born 1847.

Concerning the death of Littleberry, an article (P:3, C:3) in the Biblical Recorder, Raleigh, NC, dated November 20, 1841, reads: "Woodson Chamblee and Calvin Griffin were committed to Jail of this City [Raleigh], charged with the murder of Littleberry Bunn, a Constable of Frankin County, under circumstances of the most deliberate and atrocious cruelty. The decease was found some seven or eight days after he was supposed to have been shot, buried in a mud-hole like a dog, without covering of any kind! The singular manner in which his body was discovered, as detailed before the examining Court, proves that detection, sooner or later, will overtake the Guilty. Raleigh Register."

The Superior Court records reads as follows:

Thursday, April 7, 1842 State V. Woodson Chamblee & Calvin Griffin Indictment: Murder

Find the prisoner Woodson Chamblee guilty of the felony and murder in manner and form as charged in the bill of indictment. And the jury further find the prisoner Calvin Griffin not guilty. The prisoners are remanded to jail.

Saturday, April 9, 1842 State v. Woodson Chamblee, Calvin Griffin

The prisoners are again brought to the bar of the court in custody of the sheriff. The jury having returned a verdict of not guilty as to Calvin Griffin, his attorney therefore moves for his discharge, and on motion he is permitted to take the insolvent oath and is discharged. On motion of the counsel for the prisoner, Woodson Chamblee, it is ordered by the court that the verdict of the jury as regards the said Woodson Chamblee be set aside and a new trial granted and the prisoner be remanded back to jail.

No further mention of a follow up appearance of the above or of Woodson Chamblee for the next two years in the Superior Court records. Criminal Action Papers for Wake County are almost nonexistant, so details fo the actual case are missing. Oral history is that Woodson Chamblee got out of jail on bail and fled from North Carolina.
