James was a farmer who settled in the newly opened area of Culpepper County, Virginia. The family lived in Culpepper County until 1811, at which time they moved to Belmont County, Ohio. They settled on a farm in the Zanesville-Sonora area. (submitted by Donna Steffens Pauls).

Further research suggests that James was raised in the Quaker tradition, but after leaving New Jersey for Virginia, he fell into disgrace and was subsequently dismissed from the Company of Friends. 1

Koleda's book on Bunting family history splits his children among two different sets of parents. James parentage is still in doubt, although he does come from one of the four brothers who immigrated from England in the late 1600's.
