Haydn William Bunton was born in 1911 to Ernest Edward Bunton and Matilda Caroline Luhrs.[1]

Haydn was a gifted sportsman from a young age,[2] particularly in cricket[3] and Australian Rules football.[4] Between 1931 and 1945 he played in the Victorian Football League, (Fitzroy), Western Australian Football League (Subiaco) and the South Australian National Football League (Port Adelaide), winning the best and fairest awards in the VFL and WAFL three times each.[5]

Haydn married Lylia Frances Austin in 1936.[6] They had two sons, Hadyn Bunton Jr and David. Lylia filed for divorce in 1945.[7]; they remarried the following year.[8]

Lylia died suddenly in 1954.[9] On September 1, 1955 Haydn was critically injured when his car hit a tree. He died the following week.[10]

Haydn Bunton enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 and rose to the rank of corporal.
Haydn Bunton is an Anzac who served in World War Two.

Bunton was named in the forward pocket in the AFL Team of the Century, announced during the League’s Centenary in 1996. In the same year, he was named as one of the inaugural inductees into the AFL Hall of Fame, and was simultaneously elevated to Legend status. He was also named in Fitzroy’s Team of the Century, announced in 2001.

He had been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.

The [NSW Australian Football History Society][1] calls him "Probably the greatest football celebrity of all time".
