John was born about 1805 in Walden, VT. He is the son of John Burbank. He married Feb 26, 1833, Mary Sanborn, daughter of Capt. David Sanborn of Peacham, VT, and granddaughter of Wells Burbank of the Boscawen, NH, branch of the Burbank family.
NOTE: Both John Devine and his sister, Sarah D. Burbank, married Sanborn siblings, their second cousins. The Sanborn siblings are children of Mary Burbank, whose father was Wells Burbank. They all have the same great-grandfather and great-grandmother, Moses Burbank (b. 1717) and Sarah Emery.
John was a solider in the Civil War. Enlisted in 100 day men in Wisconsin -- called "Regiment of Greyhounds." In personal appearance he was very short and stout and broad-shouldered. It is said of him "could fell an ox he was so strong." He was a farmer. After marrying, he lived a few years in Canada and Vermont, then settled in Wisconsin and, perhaps, later, Iowa.
