Biography

John Burbank, born in 1640 in Rowley, Massachusetts, was the son of John Burbank the immigrant and his first wife Anne Jordan.

In Dewey's John Burbank of Suffield, Conn. and Some of His Descendants, he describes John Burbank being made a freeman in Boston, Mass. on 13 May 1640 where he lived at Newbury, Haverhill, and Rowley, Mass. then details his three marriages. [1] The details of becoming a freeman may be accredited to his father if his birthdate is truly 1641.

John Burbank is listed in both the 1677 and 1681 Massachusetts Early Census Index. First living in Essex County, Mass. then living in Massachusetts Colony having been made a freeman 11 May. [2]

He married first at Newbury, Massachusetts on 15 Oct 1663, Susannah Merrill[3][4][5], daughter of Nathaniel and Susannah (Jordan) Merrill.[1] After being allotted fifty acres of land on 17 July 1674, the family moved to Suffield, which was originally in Massachusetts, [1] in 1680.

John and Susannah had a daughter Mary b. 24 June 1666. [citation needed] Note: Mary is not listed in Burbank source [1]

John and Susannah had the following children: [1]

  1. Timothy b. 30 May 1668 in Haverhill, Massachusetts,
  2. John b. August 1670,
  3. Ebenezer b. 4 March 1673/4.

On 15 July 1692 in Springfield, Massachusetts, John married second, Sarah (Hart) Scone who was the the widow of John Scone of Westfield. [1] Sarah had married her 1st husband John Scone in 1675. [6][5] Sarah, died soon after on 19 August 1692. She was the daughter of Edmund Hart. [7][8][9]

On 9 January 1693 in Springfield, Massachusetts, John married third, Mehitable Sanders who was the widow of ____ Sanders of Windsor. [1]

John and Mehitable had: [1]

  1. one daughter, Susanna Burbank b. 23 November 1965, d Dec 19 1752 at Westfield, Massachusetts, m 1726 Ebenezer Phelps, son of Isaac Phelps. He was b 1687, d 1757.

Death and Burial

In the last years of his life, John began to lose his mental facilities similar to the ailment that struck his brother Caleb at a younger age. [citation needed] He died on 1 June 1709 [1] and is buried in Old Center Cemetery, Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut. [10]

Research Notes

Merged profile had him born in 1638 in Newbury, Essex, England

This profile is probably incorrectly linked to the 'wrong' Mehitable (Barlett) Burbank (1650-1725), widow of ____ Sanders, according to John Burbank of Suffield, Conn. He probably married a different Mehitable, as follows:

  • John Burbank married 'widow Mehitable Sanders' (Suffield records say Saunders of Windsor) in Springfield, Massachusetts Jan 9 1693-4. Mehitable died Feb 24 1727-28, according to John Burbank of Suffield, Conn No information about who Mehitable was a 'widow of'. [1]
  • sources for her 1st husband, Joseph Parsons, state "Mehitable was living as the widow of George Sanders / Saunders on the 12th of April 1694", [11] with no explanation. The marriage of Mehitable to John Burbank took place on Jan 1693, which is a conflict with 1694 date.
  • Mehitable was not in Springfield, Massachusetts or Suffield, Connecticut. She probably died in Simsbury, Connecticut

Research Notes added to this profile. Please review. "john Burbank" sources do not state who his wife Mehitable was a widow of. Wrong Mehitable is probably linked to this profile since she was living in 1694 as a widow of George Sanders. and marriage to Burbank was in 1693.

There were 4 children mentioned with 1st wife but no sources included for the daughter. Burbank source only lists 3 sons from 1st marriage.

Burbank-5 and Burbank-202 appear to represent the same person because: I realize this was on the rejected matches list, however these John Burbank's do indeed represent the same person. There is a question as to John's second wife's last name and parentage. My sources say Elisha Hunt was her father. However, I've seen some undocumented trees with Hart as her last name and this may need to be researched. However, they should be merged so it can be resolved collaboratively.
