ROBERT BENHAM BURCH 1797-1895 age 97

On the 11th of July 1797 Robert Benham Burch was born in Amherst County, Virginia, the son of John Burch, JR 1759-1834 and his wife, Elizabeth BENHAM 1777-1853. Robert’s Father was nick-named “Long John” because he was 6’ 6” tall! Robert Benham Burch, whose middle name was his Mother’s maiden name, was one of twelve children born to the couple.

On the 31st of May 1821 Robert Benham Burch married Anne "Annie" NICHOLS 1801-1883 in Barren County, Kentucky. One year later, they welcomed their first child - William Benham Burch born on the 25th of February 1822. Robert Burch owned 100 acres of land around Fallen Timbers, Barren County, Kentucky by the 27th of August 1823.

Robert Benham Burch was now 43 years old in 1840, his wife, Annie was 39, and they were the parents of eight children: William age 18, Philip age 17, James age 13, John age 12, Richard age 9, Robert Franklin age 7, Maranda age 6, and Tabitha age 1 and all residing in Barren County, Kentucky.

We find Robert Benham Burch on a Slave Schedule in 1850 while living in Barren County, Kentucky. This schedule only lists the name of the slave owner and NOT any names of the slaves, of which he owned two. One female, age 30, race - mulatto and one male child of ten months old who was also mulatto and most likely her son. The meaning of mulatto is having one black and one white parent.

By 1850 we find the Burch family nest is shrinking with age, Robert Burch is 52 years old, wife, Anne is 50 with William Benham Burch and Philip Hezekiah Burch leaving the nest. However, the nest also increased in size with the birth of Mary Elizabeth who was now 11, Martha Frances age 8, and Albert Oran Burch who was now 6. Plus we also find the Mother of Robert Burch, Elizabeth BENHAM Burch who was now 71 years old, living with her son and family.

In 1856 Robert Benham Burch age 58 and wife, Anna who was 54 years old, plus oldest son, William age 34 and third son, James Hezekiah Burch age 29 living in Union Township, Marion County, Iowa. I believe this could have something to do with the death of Robert Benham Burch's mother, Elizabeth BENHAM Burch, passing away on the 18th of July 1853 at the age of 76 years and 4 months, the wife of John Burch as her tombstone says.

From 1860-1870 Robert, Anna, with their children Martha and Albert were all living in Union Township, Red Rock, Marion County, Iowa.

A very interesting situation in the 1870 Marion County, Iowa census as we find an 18 year old female child with the initials E. M. Burch born in (1852) Kentucky with inferred parents being Robert Benham Burch, age 73, and his wife, Anna NICHOLS Burch now 69 years old with son, Albert Oran Burch who was now 24 years old, living with their parents. Consider this, Anna Burch would have been 51 years old in 1852 when she would have given birth to this child. While a long shot of the pregnancy happening during menopause, it has done so before to many women. Also remember there was no birth control in those days. Therefore, until further research proves otherwise, and I welcome any new research, this 18 year old female child with the initials of E. M. Burch will be included with her "inferred parents" and family members.

On the 18th of June 1883 Robert Benham Burch's beloved wife of 62 years, Annie NICHOLS Burch passed away at the age of 81 years. She was interred in the Franklin Butte Masonic Cemetery in Scio, Linn County, Iowa.

Twelve more years have gone by when on the 17th of April 1895, at the age of 97 years - just 3 months from his 98th birthday, Robert Benham Burch died in Scio, Linn County, Iowa. He was buried in the Franklin Butte Masonic Cemetery also located in Scio, Linn County, Iowa next to his beloved wife, Annie NICHOLS Burch . . . and so goes the circle of life.
