When Amelia Burchard was born on 5 March 1853 in Herman, Dodge, Wisconsin, USA, her father, Charles Gustave ""Charley" Burchard, was 35, and her mother, Elizabeth Streich, was 26. Her parents both died by the time she was 18. She married a German immigrant Stephan "Steve" Klapperich in 1878 in New Munich, Stearns, Minnesota. They had a daughter, Mary, and Amelia's son Henry when they left the state in 1880. They lived till 1896 in Nebraska, where six more children were born. In 1900 they lived in Montana but Steve died in 1901 from a lumber accident. The years were difficult; she worked as a washerwoman to support the children and her older children went to live with the family of her sister Clara Burchard Lewis. Her first son, Henry F John Feltz, lived with her most of her life. At some point a Social Security application changed her surname to Feltz and her spouse to Herman Feltz. Also, her birthdate on the death certificate is 1853 rather than 1857. She died on 13 June 1934 in Warm Springs, Montana, USA, at the age of 77, and was buried there.
