During the American Civil War he served in the military.

Hiram Burchett first married Mary Elizabeth Spencer.

Hiram Burchett married secondly to Sirilda Jane Long who received a widow's pension for his military service. ^[1]

He died in 1916 and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Butterfield, Barry County, Missouri. ^[2]

J. Mitchell's F Company, 15 MO Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The 15 was formed from the 7 from the 7 Provisional Cavalry Regiment, Union. Emerson's enlistment papers describe him as being of Marion Township, Polk Co., MO. He was 23 years of age, a farmer with blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion and 5 ft, 6 in, in height. From Aug. 1864 to Feb. 1865 Emerson was on detached service on a scout to AR. He was discharged on Jun. 30 1865.
