Parents and Family

Identified by Susanna Stringfellow Jakubik at "Susanna Jakubik's Stringfellow/Jakubik/McGinty/Yance Families" posted at Ancestry.com 11 Sep 2007, as a daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Miles) Burford.
Janice Patricia Buchanan posted at Genforum in 1998 that Elizabeth was a daughter of Philip Burford, who settled in Hanover/Louisa Co VA area.
Family Tree Maker, Rodney E. Key: "Ref. John C. Bell., p.11 This is in regards to a guardian bond for Elizabeth Key's four underage children. It names Philip Burford as the co-maker. The clerk noted that Martin Key had died in May 1757. On the same day, May 24, 1757, Philip Burford deeded land to one of the underage children and to what appears to have been an older brother. The deed for the former states that Philip Burford and Melicent (for Mildred) his wife of the County of Louisa and Parish of Fredericksville gave a 100 aa tract of land to Thomas Key of Fre..."
A gedcom at Ancestry.com has: The following transcription appears on page 55 of the original Louisa Co VA Will Book #1: "Mrs. Elizabeth Key Sent for me the 19 of December 17(??). She told me that if she died that it was her desire that (??) take her Estate into my Possession to make myself safe (??). ... was Security for her Guardianship of several of her Childre(n) and also said it was her desire what was left after pay(ing)... Children of should be Divided between her three sons tha(t) was prentises and Wm. Except her Cloaths and She desired her Daughter Thomson might have. She also Desired that her Grandson Solomon Trower mite be in my Care till I could Contrive him to his Father. She further desired that her Grandson Solomon Trower Should be decently Cloathed when Sent to his father. Signed - Philip Burford"
The known children of Martin (d. May 1757 in Louisa Co VA) and Elizabeth Key have been identified in other Louisa County records as: William Key, Jacob Key, Thomas Key, Luck Key, Elizabeth Key Thomson and an unknown female who married a Trower. Martin may have had other children by Elizabeth or possibly a first wife as well (Martin, Jr. and Charles). Although the date that Elizabeth's will was dictated is missing, Philip Burford posted bond on 26 Jan 1762 to become administrator of Elizabeth Key's estate so her death date is prior to that. Also, the placement of this record in the original will book falls between records of wills proven on 29 Jul 1761 and 11 May 1762. Based on these and other records, Elizabeth's will was probably dictated on 19 Dec 1761. submitted by: Philip R. Shipp, comphi@flash.net.[8] This "Verbal Will" information is also discussed in Dr. Gene C. Keys book, The Key Family - Deep Roots in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, "Judging from the close and long association of Phillip Burford, son of Daniel Burford, with Elizabeth Key and her sons in both Virginia and North Carolina, we believe he was a relative, most likely a brother."[9]
