His services as a competent and expert judge of horses were constantly sought. Later he moved to Hartford, Alabama, to engage in the cotton and general merchandise business exercising inherent integrity, and attained good business judgment, he quickly built himself into the community. At the time of his death he was President of the First National Bank of Hartford and was interested in other enterprises.
Death came to Mr. Burford on the day of his fiftieth wedding anniversary, and two days later the earth, always kind to man spreading his table with plenty and his pathway with flowers, received him into her friendly bosom to rest in the Hartsfield Cemetery, by the side of his dear companion, who had preceded him to the grave 47 years. A large concourse of people met the funeral train on his arrival in Hartsville. The obsequies were conducted in the Baptist Church by Rev. J. T. Oakley assisted by Dr. Holt of the First Presbyterian church in Nashville. The pallbearers both active and honorary were chosen from the friends at Dickson Springs in Hartsville.
The Burford family and connections have been and are yet closely identified with the life and activity of the Dixon Springs community, and have contributed much for civic civic betterment.
