Biography

Anna Maria Burge (aka Hannah Maria Burge) was born in 1827 at Priors Wood Farm in Taunton St James, Somerset, England to John Burge and Charlotte (Bruford) Burge.

In 1841 Anna Burge (age 14) lived at Priorswood Farm in Taunton St James with her father John (45-49, Farmer), mother Charlotte (45-49), and three siblings: Mary (15-19), John (12), and Sarah (9).[1]

In 1851 Hannah Burge (age 23) lived at Priors Wood Farm in Taunton St James with her father John (57, Farmer 190 Ac Emp 12 Labs), mother Charlotte (58), brother John (21), sister Sarah (19), and two servants: Stephen Day (15, Farmer's Servant) and Mary Pring (18, Farmer's Servant).[2][3]

In 1861 Anna M Burge (age 33) lived at Flook House in Taunton with her widowed mother Charlotte (69, Income From Land), sister Sarah S (29), niece Alice M Foster (4, Scholar), and servant Mary Dywood (45, General Servant).[4][5]

Anna Maria Burge (age 34, Spinster, daughter of John Burge) and William Coram (age 25, Bachelor, son of William Coram) were married on 26 Dec 1861 at Saint James in Southampton, Hampshire.[6][7] The marriage was registered in Southampton in the last quarter of the year.[8]

In 1871 Hannah M Coram (age 42) lived at Little Park Farm in Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire with her husband William (35, Farmer) and niece Mary Ann Foster (22).[9]

Anna's husband passed away before 1881.

In 1881 Alice [Anna] Maria Coram (age 53) was a visitor at Priors Wood in Taunton St James in the household of her widowed brother-in-law William Lea Foster (64, Farmer 274 Acres 9 Men 3 Boys & 2 Women) - also in the household were William's four children: Mary Anna Hicks (32), Louisa Sophia Foster (29), Alice Maria Foster (25), and Herbert Henry Foster (17), as well as servant Isabella Moore (19, General Servant Domestic).[10] [William Lea Foster's late wife was Anna's older sister Mary (Burge) Foster.]

In 1891 Anna M Coram (age 62) was a visitor at Redcliffe Villa/Dawlish Road in East Teignmouth, Devon in the household of William L Foster (74, Living On Own Means) - also in the household were William's daughter Anna L Foster (29) and two servants: Alice Chick (22, Cook) and Mary Bridge (16, Housemaid).[11]

Anna Maria Coram passed away on 12 Aug 1896, aged 69 years. Her death was registered in Bridgwater, Somerset in the third quarter of the year.[12] Anna Maria Coram of Bridgwater was buried on 15 Aug 1896 in North Petherton, Somerset.[13][14]

Probate of her estate was granted on 2 Jan 1897[15]:

  • "CORAM Anna Maria of Roundell-house South Petherton Somersetshire widow died 12 August 1896 at "the Willow's" Hamp near Bridgewater Somersetshire Administration London 2 January [1897] to Sarah Sophia Burge (wife of James Burge) Effects £307 1s. 7d."[16] [Sarah Sophia Burge was Anna's younger sister - her maiden and married names were both Burge.]
