Biography

John was a Slave Owner

John is the son of Edward and Sarah (Chew) Burgess.[1] He married Jane Macklefresh on 15 Dec 1720.[2] Among their children are:

  • William, b. 09 Oct 1721
  • Anne, b. 04 Mar 1722
  • John, b. 08 Jun 1725
  • Joseph, b. 27 Jan 1726
  • Sarah, b. 02 Feb 1727
  • Mary, b. 27 Jan 1730
  • Benjamin Burgess, b. 1732
  • Baby Girl, d. in infancy, buried 1732.
  • Edward

After Jane's death, he married Matilda Sparrow, daughter of Thomas and Ann Sparrow, on 27 Jan 1733.[3] Among their children are:

  • Samuel, b. 28 Feb 1735
  • West, b. 23 Nov 1737
  • Caleb, b. Sep 1739

To son Benjamin Burgess, tract called 'Puddington or "Puddington Harbour" near Beards Creek running to a division post between Major Jenifer, Charles Stewart and myself; and also the land whereon I now dwell after the marriage or decease of my two daus., Anna Burgess and Susannah Burgess; Negro boy Joseph.

To grandson John Burgess son of my late son William Burgess, remaining part of 'Puddington or if he dies without heirs then to my grandson John West Burgess son of my late son Samuel Burgess.

Burgess-1867 and Burgess-1960 appear to represent the same person because: they appear to have the same birth and death date, and other vital information appear to be the same.
