SABAEL - Rita Burgess Kattrein, age 87, of Lake Shore Road, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, after a brief stay at Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home and two years in Connecticut at The Village at Brookfield Commons, a retirement community.
Born Sept. 2, 1918, in Sabael, Rita was the daughter of the late Portus "PR" and Mary (Spring) Burgess.
Rita was a graduate of Indian Lake Central School. She also received a bachelor's degree in education from Syracuse University and a master's degree from Columbia University.
Rita married William "Bill" J. Kattrein Jr. in 1951, and lived in Albany for several years before moving back to the Adirondacks. Rita and Bill enjoyed 51 years of marriage prior to Bill's death, April 9, 2002. They spent much of their time in Jamaica, West Indies, both by themselves and with friends and family. They also had a fondness for Costa Rica and taking short trips in their airplane. A favorite travel destination for Rita was the American southwest.
Rita taught school in Edwards, N.Y., in the Bronx and in Washingtonville, N.Y. She was also employed as a substitute teacher at Indian Lake Central School. While living in Albany, she was employed at Picker X-Ray.
As a youth, Rita enjoyed outdoor life in the area, particularly swimming and hiking up Snowy Mountain. She also loved to dance. Although active in the Indian Lake Central School Alumni Association, political activities, reading and snowmobiling, her primary focus as an adult was her family.
Rita is survived by her children and stepchildren: Karl Kattrein of Brookfield, Conn., Jenna Mahoney and her husband, Bill, of Sherman, Conn., Kurt Kattrein and his wife, Amy, of Cazenovia, N.Y., Tyler Kattrein of Glenmont and Teena Olson and her husband, Jack, of Doylestown, Pa.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, George "Coach" Burgess of Indian Lake; a sister, Arleen Carroll of Queensbury; and many nieces and nephews.
Rita was predeceased by two sisters, Myrtle Reilly and Bernadette Denio.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Rita's life, conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Miller Funeral Home, 35 West Main St., Indian Lake.
