He died at Cessnock Hospital in 1935 and was buried in the Ellalong Cemetery.
CONGEWAI PIONEER DEAD
Mr Joseph Burgess. The death occurred at Cessnock Hospital on Monday of Mr. Joseph Burgess, of Bellbird,, aged 81 years. the cause of his death was bronchitis.
Deceased was predeceased by his wife eight years ago, he is survived by five sons, Ernest, Herbert, Thomas, William and Clarence — thirty grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. He was laid to rest in the Church of England portion of Ellalong cemetery.
The late Mr Burgess had a charming personality, and was held in esteem by all who knew him. He had a wonderful memory and could recall the year, and often the date, of many interesting facts long forgot ten by most older hands. The late Mr. Burgess was born at sea on a voyage from England, and was the son of James Burgess, a pioneer of Congewai, where most of deceased's life was spent. He was the last of that family, other deceased members being William and David and Jane (Mrs. Nancarrow), whose son, James, is Secretary of Newcastle Chamber of Commerce.
