Charles Burgess was born in in West Cornwallis, Nova Scotia.
He married Georgianna Dewar on January 14, 1864.
Usually known as "C.R" or "Roof", Charles Rufus Burgess was one of the largrst ship-builders in Nova Scotia. He amassed a fortune and his residence at Wolfville, Nova Scotia was the grandest in the country. It is still standing and has become famous as the Blomidon Inn of Wolfville with 5 star dining.
The following is taken from Eaton's History of Kings County: In 1883, Mr.Burgess purchased the ship-building interests of Philip R. Crichton and soon owned more ships in the country than anyone else. His fleet of full-rigged ships were all built and launched at Kingsport except one, the "Earl Burgess' 1,800 tons was built in 1887 at Parrsboro, N.S. The others were; the "Kammira", 1,885 tons, built in 1882; the "Karoo", 1,900 tons, built in 1883; the "Queens", 1,894 tons, built in 1891; the "Goldenrod", built in 1892 and the "Skoda", built in 1893.
