"Kingstree, July 28- Robert E. Burgess died here early Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. D. Mills, after an illness of about two months. Mr. Burgess was a son of the late Samuel A. Burgess and was 72 years of age. He is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Amerilla Kennedy. He was born and reared in the Bethel section of Williamsburg county, where his ancestors have been prominent for several generations. Mr. Burgess is also survived by two brothers and four children: D. I. Burgess and Thomas E. Burgess, brothers; J. D. Burgess, Miss Retha Burgess, Mrs. R. D. Mills and Mrs. J. C. Wilson, all of whom reside in the Bethel community.
Mr. Burgess was a man of exemplary character. For 45 years he had been an officer in the Bethel Presbyterian church and was a devoted Christian. No one in the whole community was more highly respected by both races than Mr. Robert E. Burgess. As a testimony to his excellent qualities the citizenry from miles around gathered to pay tribute to his memory. All of the old gray haired negroes in the neighborhood were present with looks of sadness on their faces for their departed friend and adviser, "Mars Robert." Funeral services were conducted at Bethel church by the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Crawley. Burial was made in the Burgess burying ground, where underneath the stately old moss covered oaks sleep the remains of his ancestors and departed children."[1]
