Engaged in shipbuilding in Kings County when he was young, often personally taking charge of cargoes that he conveyed to Boston and New York. Captain Burgess was a member of the Provincial Government at halifax, Nova Scotia between 1861 and 1863. In 1872, he removed with his family to Cambridge, Massachusetts, residing there until his death.
