Research Notes

Civil War - Many researchers have attached Civil War Records to John Cotlett Burgin that were actually for John D. Burgin (his cousin). No records for John Cotlett Burgin have been found, the land grant record for 1863 hints that he did not serve in the Civil War.

Notes from Echoes in the Mist
1563C - John Cotlett (or Colett?) Burgin, born July 31, 1831, died December 8, 1880. Probably died in Gaston County, N.C. Place or burial unproven. John married Eva Malinda Spake, February 21, 1850 in McDowell County. Eva born September 18, 1833, died February 7, 1903. Buried at Bethlehem Cemetery outside of Old Fort on Sugar Hill Road. Eva was the daughter of Phillip Spake and Sallie Louise Lewis. In the 1850 census, John and Eva Malinda were living with his parents, Jesse and Martha. They lived in McDowell County until ca 1880 when they moved to Cherryville, N.C. in Gaston County. Probably to work in the mill just opened there. John's sister Rebecca was living with them. In June of 1880 John was ill with dyspepsia. After John died Eva lived with son Erastus and his family. They had nine children. [7]
