Biography

John (Jackie) Burgin was the son of James Burgin and Mary McCarty. John was born about 1784 in Virginia and died around 1850 in Lee County, Virginia. [1]

Family legend puts the marriage date of John Burgin and Susannah Ely around 1807 in Virginia.

John Burgin is recorded in the 1810 Virginia, Lee County, Personal Property Tax List as one male, no slaves, and six horses. [2]

John was enlisted in the U.S. Army on 18 June 1812 by Ensign Bangs for what appears to be 18 months. Remarks are Book 674 [3] Other records capture that John served in Bradley's Regiment, Virginia Militia as a Private.[4] When Susannah filed for his 1812 pension as a widow she mentions the unit, Captain J. Skelton's Company, Virginia Militia.[5]

John is last enumerated in the 1850 United States Census living in District 31 of Lee County, Virginia. John is a farmer with 300 acres of real estate. John states that he is 65 years of age and that he was born in 1785 in Virginia.[9]

Research Notes

Bethel Methodist Cemetery was visited by Gary Burgin in June of 2019 looking for any possible head stone. No head stones were discovered but there are a few square white stones in line with the rest of the family which may belong to John Burgin.
