1 September 1916, Waldo enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces; Service number: 818. He was assigned to 36th Aust. Heavy Artillery Battalion, saw action in France and attained the rank of Gunner[2]. He was returned to Australia on 27 December 1918 and discharged on 1 February 1919.

While overseas he met and married Lilian Agnes COWAN on 26 February 1918 in Glasgow, Scotland[4][2].
13 January 1919, Waldo applied for free passage from England to Australia for his wife[2].
Sadly, wife, Lilian died in childbirth in 1919 in Carlton, Victoria, Australia
Elsie Louise RIDDELL and widower, Waldo Emmerson BURGOYNE were married in 1920 in Victoria, Australia[5].
23 December 1941, Waldo enlisted in the Australia Military Forces - Home Service; Service Number: V145093. He was assigned to 3 Dist Accounts (Clerk), attained the rank of L/Sgt and was discharged 24 November 1943[6].
He passed away on 5 June 1960 in Glen Iris, Victoria, Australia[7][8] and was buried at the St. Kilda Cemetery, St Kilda, Port Phillip City, Victoria, Australia[9].
