Biography

Fernando was born in 1836. He was the son of William Burk and Catherine Stoner.

In 1850 he was age 13 living in Cato, Cayuga, New York, United States with his father William, step mother Lydia and siblings Giles, Adelaide, Marshall, Marcus, Jennett, Catherine and William.[1] He was living with his parents and siblings in Cato in 1855[2] and 1860.[3]

He was a school teacher and met Myra Bowen in Attica, New York. They married in April 1860. They worked on her brother's farm for a year, and in 1861 he purchased a 75 acre farm at Meacham Corners in Meridian.[4]

When he registered for the Civil War draft in June 1863 he was a married farmer living in Cato.[5]

In 1865 he was enumerated in the census for Cato, Cayuga, New York as F N Burk, age 28 with his wife M E Burk age 28 born in Genesee County, New York and daughter S B Burk age 3 1/2 born in Cayuga County.[6]

In 1867 he fell in the barn, was seriously injured, and died.[4] He is buried in Meridian Cemetery, Meridian, Cayuga County, New York.[7] Although his gravesite memorial has no death date, the memorial for his daughter has an image of his gravestone. The engraving includes Fernando N Burke 1836-1867, Myra E Bowen, his wife 1835-1906, and Stella Burke Bowen 1862-1934.[8] The grave memorial identifies his wife as Myra E Brown.

Both Fernando, deceased, and his daughter Stella were named in his father's will in 1877.[9]
