On Sunday, February 24, 1924, Merton had placed some oil on the stove to thaw out, and then went outside to do some chores. While he was gone, the oil overflowed on the stove, and set the place on fire.
His wife, Luellyn, two daughters Mary and Valma, and son Edward, managed to escape to safety.
A grandmother of the children, Mrs. William Mitchell, who lives about a mile away, rushed to the scene, and was badly burned while attempting to help rescue those within.
Merton also suffered burns, during the rescue attempts of their children, but not seriously.
Tragically, two of Merton's daughters perished in the fire, Blanche (12), and Louise (3). [7] [8]
