Biography

JOHN EMERSON BURK, the third child of Alexander and Mary Burk was born in 1877. He went with his parents to Alabama at the turn of the century. He met and married Grace Emma Davis on November 16. 1898, probably in Limestone County. One child was born to this marriage, but the young boy died as an infant as probably was buried near Athens Alabama where his mother was later interned. Grace Emma Davis died in August of 1930. Grace was a school teacher in her earlier life. Little is known of Jon's life after he married other than he remained in Alabama when his parents and siblings returned to Ohio, It is known that he had cotton farms. Ira Jay Burk, son of George Washington Burk, tells of how his Uncle John asked him to go to Alabama and help him run the cotton farms after Ira Jay returned to the United States from his tour of duty with the army from the Philippine Islands in 1929. Jay did not take John up on the offer and says that in the early 1930's during the depression John lost his cotton farms which were located near Citronelle Alabama. It was just a short time before the "crash" that John sold his one farm and purchased two more, but lost all when the "bank holiday" was declared. Arlene Burke Poling says she remembers having her picture taken in a cotton field. Ola Anna Burk Rogers tells of how one day in the early 1930's her Uncle John drove his Model A Ford into the yard of her father's farm with a trunk packed with all his belongings. John spent most of his last years in the vicinity of Butler, Indiana living with a lady who ran a chicken farm. John died June 16, 1946 from a skull fracture sustained in an automobile accident in Butler, Indiana. He is buried on his brother George's lot in Whig Center Cemetery south of Butler Michigan in Branch County. His grave is unmarked."
