Biography of Patrick BURKE of 1793

Patrick Burke was born about 1793 in Ballyoughtera, Creagh Civil Parish Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland. His could be the son of John Burke, because he gave two of his sons the name John, or the son of Timothy Burke because that is the name he gave his other son, but seeing that Timothy is at least a fourth son, Timothy may be named after the one of Patrick's relatives, as there are several Timothy Burkes. It is likely that this Patrick Burke has a brother named Timothy. It is also likely that he has siblings named Michael and Honora, as Michael Burke and Honora Burke are both baptismal sponsors, each for one of Patrick's younger children.

Patrick Burke's mother might be a Collins, as two men with the surname Collins serve as baptismal sponsors for his children. She also might be named Margaret, as Patrick names his only daughter Margaret.

Patrick Burke married Cate Leahy by 1817, lived in Ballyoughtera townland, and had children:

  1. John Burke, I was born in December 1817 in or near Ballyoughtera, Creagh, County Cork, Ireland, and John Burke was baptized on December 20, 1817, near Skibbereen in the Creagh and Sullon Congregation, Diocese of Cork and Ross. His baptismal sponsors were Richard Collins and Mary Leahy. His godmother was probably a sister or cousin of his mother. John probably did not live very long, as another brother is given the same name in 1823.
  2. Darby Burke, born June 1819, and baptized June 6, 1819 near Skibbereen in the Creagh and Sullon Congregation, Diocese of Cork and Ross. His baptismal sponsors were Darby Collins and Margaret Savage. Darby Collins is probably related to Richard Collins who is the baptismal sponsor of Darby's brother John Burke.
  3. John Burke, II born 1823, and baptized 1823 near Skibbereen in the Creagh and Sullon Congregation, Diocese of Cork and Ross. His baptismal sponsors were Michael Minihane and Margaret Savage.
  4. Timothy Burke, baptized December 16, 1825, in the Diocese of Skibbereen and Rath. Baptismal sponsors were John Leahy and Cate Burke. Timothy's godfather was probably a brother or cousin of his mother, and his godmother was probably a sister or cousin of his father.
  5. Michael Burke, born September 1830 in or near Ballyoughtera, Creagh, County Cork, Ireland, and baptized September 21, 1830, in the Diocese of Skibbereen and Rath. Baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Gearry and Honora Burke.
  6. Margaret Burke, born in March 1833 in or near Ballyoughtera, Creagh, County Cork, Ireland, and baptized March 24, 1833 in the Diocese of Skibbereen and Rath. Baptismal sponsors were Michael Burke and Joanna Leahy.

Research Notes

Patrick Burke is probably not the father of Timothy Randall Burke, but we are not sure yet who Timothy Randall Burke's father is. More research is necessary.

  1. Both Patrick Burke and Randal Burke have a son named Timothy
  2. Both Daniel Burke and Timothy Burke have a son named Randal.
  3. Perhaps these fathers are two sets of cousins? More research is necessary.
  4. Richard Collins and Darby Collins might be related to Ellena Collins who married Randal Burke before 1820.
  5. Catherine Leahy might be the daughter of a Darby Leahy because she gave her second son the name Darby.
  6. Catherine Leahy, wife of Patrick Burke, might be the Catherine Leahy who was baptismal sponsor for John Driscoll, Jr., son of John Driscoll, Sr. and his wife Honora McCarthy of Ballyoughtera on June 29, 1821 with Denis Cadogan as the other sponsor.
  7. Michael Burke sponsor of Margaret Burke may be brother or cousin of Patrick Burke.
