John Bernard Burke (called Bernard) was born in 1814 in London, England, the second son of John Burke and Mary O'Reilly (died 1846). [1]
He was a noted genealogist and, among other books, he was the author of:[2]
"Ulster King of Arms; Registrar and Knight Attendant of the Order of St. Patrick; Keeper of the State Papers of Ireland; Governor and Trustee of the National Gallery of Ireland, barrister-at-law of the [Middle Temple (called to the bar, 1839), author of The Peerage and Baronetage, The Commoners, The Landed Gentry, The Extinct and Dormant Peerage, The Extinct Peeraqe, The General Armory, The Vicissitudes of Families, and many other well known genealogical and historical works... educated at Caen College, University of France."[2]
Bernard was educated at the College of Caen, Normandy (France) and called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1839.[1]

In 1853, he was appointed Ulster King of Arms, and Knight Attendant of the Order of St. Patrick. [1] (The Ulster King of Arms exercised control over the heraldic affairs of Ireland.)
Bernard was knighted Sir Bernard in 1854 and in 1862 the University of Dublin conferred upon him the honorary degree of LL.D. In 1868, he was created a Companion of the Bath. [1]
Bernard married Barbara Frances MacEvoy on 8 January 1856 in Dublin, Ireland. [2] Their children were:
Sir Bernard died on 12 December 1892 in Dublin, Ireland. [7]
An obituary in Sydney's Freeman's Journal incorrectly recorded his death date as 13 December 1892.[8] The correct date is 12 December 1892.
