Biography

Richard was born about 1902.[1] He went to St. Mary's Catholic School, and graduated from Oswego High School.[2] He married Dorothy Louise Galloway on 1 Dec 1923.[3] He was employed in the family business, the T. J. Burke Lumber Company. He was its treasurer and secretary.[2] He passed away on 7 June 1933 from pneumonia; he was just 30 years old. [2]

    Richard J. Burke, secretary of the T. J. Burke Lumber Company, Inc., died Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in this home, ?? West Third street, after a comparatively brief illness of pneumonia. His condition became critical several days ago. Announcement of his death was received with a surge of sadness by his many friends.

    Mr. Burke was born in Oswego, the son of T. J. and Susan Kelly Burke, and was 30 years of age. He was educated at St. Mary's school and graduated from Oswego High school. On leaving school Mr. Burke was associated with his father in the wholesale lumber business, and when it was incorporated several years ago, was elected secretary-treasurer. Mr. Burke was active in the business life of the city. His pleasing disposition and courteous manner made him well-liked among all whom he met.

    He was a communicant of St. Mary's church, and was affiliated with the Holy Name society, and was active in all parish affairs. He was a member of Oswego Council 227, Knights of Columbus.

    Sympathy is extended survivors including his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Galloway Burke; four children, William, Richard, Thomas J. and Mary Jean Burke; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Burke; one brother, Edward K. Burke, and two sisters, Mrs. John J. Handley, Oswego, and Mrs. Thomas J. Johnston, Fulton.

    Arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.
