Biography

Lela Stem Burke was born on December 22, 1891 in Denton, Texas to Myra Norman Burke and her husband William Washington Burke. Her mother Myra gave her the middle name of Stem after her obstetrician.^[1]

About 1894, after the birth of Stella Dove, Lela's sister, the family moved to Oklahoma. This move included Mary Virginia and all of Lela's uncles and aunts. Between 1906 and 1910, most of the family, with the exception of Myra and William, and Myra's brother George, moved to Oregon.

About 1903, Myra, William and their children Annie Laurie, Lela Stem, Stella Dove and Ivan Fitzhugh moved to La Grange, Georgia so they could live close by to William Burke's family. While in Georgia (about 1908), Lela married John Angell at a young age. They had two children: Anna Jeanette Angell and Mary Virginia Angell. Mary Virginia was named after Lela's grandmother Mary Virginia Dalton Norman. Before 1910, John and Lela soon divorced and Lela moved back to live with her mother Myra.

About 1914, Myra and William with their five children moved to California. It is not know if they lived for a short time in Oregon before finally settling in California.

On November 19, 1919, Lela married Rufus Putnam Collins in Alameda, California. They had one daughter Daisy Collins in 1923. Rufus died at an early age of 35 in 1928 from a brain tumor. Their daughter Daisy was only 5 years old.

She later married Robert Fallon Collins, who Daisy remembers as being a father to her. Lela also married Henry J. Fischer, Robert Hoxsey (married July 9, 1979 in Nevada), and their may have been one other^[2]

The family did not have much money when the children were growing up but Lela's uncle William Houston "Hous" Norman used to drive from Arizona to California to help the family with money and food. Lela was always generous and kind to everyone and opened her home to many family and friends.

When she died in 1984, she listed her name as Lela Collins. It is uncertain when she took back this name. She passed away in her home in Hemet, California and is buried in San Jacinto Cemetery.
