Biography

Queenie was born 18 Sep 1897. She was the daughter of Andrew Burkes and Eula McRae, who were married 06 Dec 1896. That means she was born 9 months, and 12 days after the marriage. The next child born was Cecil Hope Burkes (Chastain), who was born 23 Dec 1899. I have posted a photo of Queenie and Hope together that was made at a studio in Bonham (Foster). Since Hope was not born until 23 Dec 1899, the date I had for Queenie's death cannot possibly be correct since Hope is at least a year old in the photo, and there is 2 years, 3 months difference in their ages. By the time the census was enumerated on 1 Jun 1900, Hope is there but Queenie is not, so she died sometime between the time of the photo and not too long before the census. Several in the family say that she died in an epidemic, possibly the flu. I have found one record that mentions an epidemic in Fannin County in that timeframe. I browsed the Fanning County, Texas GEBWEB, and found that there are several references to an epidemic that killed a number of people in 1899, i.e.:

“Easter Clementine Cassady - Born Nov. 18, 1855 Roane Co. Tn. Died 1899 Windom Texas, Fannin Co...Epidemic of some sort.”

Michael Andrew Grissom and I have been researching unsuccessfully for years now trying to find when Queenie died and where she is buried.
