Biography

Richard was born about 1727 in Burkes Old Tavern, Nottoway, Virginia Colony.

Richard Burke used two last names. Burke and Burk. He signed his will Burkes, this is why I chose to use Burke. He was born about 1730 and died 1793 in Nottoway Virginia. Richard served as a private in 5th and 7th Regiment of Virginia in 1778.

Burkeville, originally named Haytokah, is located near the West end of Nottoway County, at the junction of the main line of the Norfolk & Western RR and the Richmond & Danville Division of the Southern RR. Two Federal Hwys cross here, Route 460E and W; and Route 360N & S. Burkeville receive its name from Burke's Old Tavern, orgiginally owned by Colonel Richard Burke. This tavern still stands about a mile West of town. It was built about 1731. It was here that the stagecoaches stopped, and many famous persons spent the night here, among them being John Randolph of Roanoke. Tarleton's British Cavalry raiding West stopped her in July 1781. He passed away about 1793 in Prince Edward, Virginia, United States.

Found multiple versions of name. Using Richard Burkes.

Born ABT 1730. Burkes Old Tavern, Nottoway, Virginia, United States.

I changed Richard Burkes estimated birth year from 1730 to 1720 which is a better fit if he was the "Richard Burk received a license to keep an ordinary at Crawford's in January 1750. This may have been located in Prince Edward." This quote is from page 20 of 24, "The Settlement of Prince Edward County" in the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 62, No. 4 (Oct., 1954) - link below. I assume "at Crawford's" refers to a location where a person with the surname of Crawford lived or a community of that name. Using FamilySearch.org ; I could not locate a Crawford in P. E. Co., VA in the early 1700's.

Crawford's and Crawford's house are mentioned several time in the "Amelia County Road Orders 1735-1753" (link below). The place names (which appear on modern maps) mentioned with Crawford's/Crawford's house are:

Flatt Creek

Saylors Creek Road

Great Sailors Creek

So based on the above place names, I would estimate "at Crawford's" where Richard Burke requested a license to keep an ordinary in 1750, likely was about six miles north of the now town of Burks Tavern in the general area to the east of the Prince Edward County line to say a mile or two east into the very north western corner of Nottoway Co. (just below Amelia Co.) - generally along modern Hwy. 307 (Holly Farms Rd.). This is the general area that includes now named Flat Creek; Saylers Creek; and Sayler's Creek Rd.

Died will proved June 5, 1794; died & buried in family cemetery on grounds of Burkes Old Tavern, Prince Edward/ Nottoway Co, VA. ABT 1793. Burkes Old Tavern, Prince Edward Co, Virginia, USA.

Marriage Husband Richard Burkes. Wife Mildred (Milliner Milly) Hawkins. Child: Charles Burks. Marriage 26 JAN 1749. Amelia Co, now Prince Edward Co, VA.

Burkes-88 and Burke-10730 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse and Children. Children need merging also. I believe they are the same
