Biography

“John Peter Burkhalter, Jr., served as a private and ensign in the Revolution. He married (first) Dorothea Steckel, who was born March 2, 1764, and died May 3, 1798.”[1] She was the daughter of Peter and Mary Elizabeth (Bear) Steckel.[2]

On 1 Apr. 1792 John Peter bought all of his father’s land.[3]

“Peter Burkhalter, Jr.” appears in the 1800 census in Northampton Co., PA (listed right below his father) as follows: 3 males under 10 (sons Daniel, Joseph and Charles); 1 male 10-16 (son Peter); 1 male 16-26 (son Henry); 1 male 26-45 (Peter); 2 females under 10 (daughters Catherine and Elisabeth); 2 females 10-16 (daughters Salome and Magdalena); 2 females 16-25 (could these be daughters of his second wife?); 1 female 26-45 (second wife Charlotta).

“Peter Burkhalter, Sr.” appears in the 1810 census in Whitehall Twp., Northampton Co., PA as follows: 2 males 10-16 (sons Charles and Joseph?); 1 male over 45 (Peter); 2 females 10-16 (daughters Catharine and Elisabeth); 1 female over 45 (wife Charlotta).

John Peter Burkhalter “married (second) July 3, 1798, Charlotta Guth. He died in 1814.”[4]
