Biography

John Burhalter served in the George Militia during the Revolutionary War. His tombstone is in the Buena Vista City Cemetery in Marion County, Georgia.[1]

Research Notes

John and his father Michael Burkhalter, who married Martha Newsom, were both soldiers of the Revolution. John ran away from home and joined the Revolutionary forces when his father was brought home wounded. Martha (Michael's wife) turned her home over to the sick and wounded and nursed and administered to the sick and wounded. This she could well afford to do as Michael was a man of means. Martha Burkhalter received a land frant in Warren County, GA in 1752.[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Burkhalter-551 and Burkhalter-20 do not represent the same person because: Different parents, nothing in common

I just set this profile in an unmerged match with Burkhalter-551. Much of the text on that profile appears to apply to this John.

'update - looking less likely as duplicates - more sources all around are needed before proposing merges

found another couple whose profiles are probably duplicates (Hans & Sarah... Ann "Marcus" is the first profile I've found for John's second wife).

  1. Milledge.-1 - Sarah (Milledge.) Burkhalter (1720-abt.1772)
  2. Marcus-19 - Ann (Marcus) Newsom (abt.1750-1814)

Hi! The DAR record for Michael Burkhalter has a correction, that this John is son of John Burkhalter, not Michael. See the DAR records for
posted by Liz (Noland) Shifflett
looks like John Burkhalter-60 represents the son of John (Burkhalter-57) who married (1) Sarah M, (2) Ann Newsom. David Burkhalter-26 (husband of Ann Eliza Short) is currently attached to Sarah Hardin, who is attached as wife of John Burkhalter-20 - who is attached as father of David and son of Michael Burkhalter-53.

Another Michael - Burkhalter-437 - is attached as father of another John, Burkhalter-57 (husband of Sarah Milledge.-1) but the text on that John's profile appears to support that he's the father of the John, Jacob, & Isaac that DAR says belong to John, son of John (see children named in the DAR record for John m Sarah M X ... A017334).

Hope all this makes sense. We have confusion in DAR records and duplicates in WikiTree that follow both sets of records (Michael -> John -> David m Ann Eliza & John -> John -> David m Ann Eliza).
