Biography

Maria Antoinette Burkhart was born November 11, 1833, in Summit Township, Butler, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Elijah Burkhart and Rebecca B. Richardson. Marie married John Emrick, second son of Andrew Emrick and Catherine Bortner (Burtner). ^[1] Children of Maria and John are:

• Daniel Baxter Emrick 1857-1941

• William John Emrick 1858-1941, married Nancy Jane Cruikshank ^[2]

• Asa Waters Emrick born 1860

• Rebecca Catherine Emrick, married Augustus M. Swartz ^[3]

• Albert Finley Emrick

• Barbara A. Emrick, born 1866, died 1954 ^[4]

• Samuel M. Emrick 1868-1924, married Idelette Ogden ^[5]

• Mary E. Emrick, married Samuel G. Hughes

Maria died August 6, 1906, at the age of 72 years and is buried in the churchyard of the Summit United Presbyterian Church. Note: the Surname on the headstone for Maria and John is clearly written Emrick, as is the name of the children, who are also buried here. Yet, the Find A Grave memorials may be found under the alternate spelling of the surname as "Emerick." ^[6]
