Biography

In 1850, Ezekiel (age 5) lived in Keene, Ohio, with his parents, David (age 38) and Catherine (age 33), and his siblings: Lydia (age 12), Jacob (age 10), Mary "Polly" (age 8), David (age 7), Roseanna (age 3), and baby Harriet. Polly Clindinick (age 73) lived with the family - she probably was Catherine's mother. "Klindings" and "Clindinick" may have been confused by the Census taker.

In 1856, the family moved to Platteville, Wisconsin.

In 1860, Ezekiel (age 14) lived in Harrison, Grant County, Wisconsin, with his parents, David (age 54) and Catherine (age 43), and his siblings: Jacob (age 21), Polly (age 18), David (age 16), Roseanna (age 12), Catherine (age 6), James (age 4), and baby John J. The elder David was a cooper. Jacob and young David were farmhands. The family had $400 in real estate and $150 in personal property.

On February 1, 1864, Ezekiel enlisted as a private with Company C of the 7th Regiment of Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers. On May 5, 1864, the 7th fought in the Battle of the Wilderness. On or about May 15th, the 7th marched on Spotsylvania Courthouse. Ezekiel developed an enlarged heart and "general debility...produced by excessive fatigue and marching during the campaign preceding the fall of Richmond." He was transferred to Haddington General Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was certified as disabled and was discharged on January 9, 1865.

On November 3, 1872, Ezekiel married Elizabeth "Ellen" Rice. They farmed in Harrison and had seven children:

Elizabeth Burkholder Tucker 12 June 1873 – 1941

Edward Burkholder 10 July 1875 – 23 February 1972

Alice Burkholder 21 June 1877 – 21 December 1878

Myrtle Burkholder October 1879 – Deceased

Willard Ezekiel Burkholder 4 July 1882 – 20 December 1970

Charles Roy Burkholder 15 July 1885 – 11 March 1973

Edith P Burkholder 28 March 1888 – 12 April 1888

On March 2, 1975, Ezekiel applied for an invalid's pension, claiming that he was totally incapacitated for manual labor.

In 1880, Ezekiel (age 35) and Ellen (age 36) farmed and lived in Harrison with their children: Lizzie (age 6), Edward (age 5), and baby Myrtle [Mirta]. That year, neighbors Malcom Ray and Henry Winters testified under oath that Ezekiel's health "has been bad has suffered greatly from some heart trouble and for a period of about four years after his return from the service he was totally unable to do any kind of work, that since that time his health seemed to improve and for the last ten years has been able to engage in light work at times; but never heavy; and during this period for several months at a time the soldier would be totally unable to do any kind of manual labor or to make the least exertion...".

Ezekiel's doctor testified that Ezekiel had been healthy when he enlisted but had required continued treatment for heart trouble since his discharge. J.H. Holcomb, who had been a second lieutenant with the 7th also testified in Ezekiel's behalf and the invalid pension was awarded.

In 1900, Ezekiel (age 55) and Ellen (age 56) lived in Harrison with their children: Edward (age 25), Myrtie (age 21), Willard (age 18), and Charles (age 15).

In 1905, Ezekiel (age 59) and Ellen (age 61) farmed in Harrison with their children: Edward (age 28), Willard (age 22) and Charles (age 19). All three sons were laborers. Ezekiel's brother Jacob and his family lived on the next farm.

In 1910, Ezekiel (age 64) and Ellen (age 65) lived on the farm in Harrison with sons Edward (age 36) and Charles [Charley] R. (age 25). Charles helped his parents work the farm and Edward "worked out". Jacob Burkholder still worked the next farm. Willard Burkholder and his family lived two farms over from Willard's parents.

Ezekiel is buried in the Whig Cemetery in Platteville.
