Benjamin Harrison Burks was born about 1842 in Pittsylvania, Virginia to James and Mary Burks.

In the 1850 census of Pittsylvania, parents James and Mary had three children, and by 1860 in southern Pittsylvania had the following:

After the war, Benjamin was married in about 1867, and he and wife Louisa were living in Irisburg in Henry County, Virginia in 1880, with the following children:
