Biography

In 1852 Jospeh had an affair with his next-door neighbour Hannah Brown nee Burley resulting the the birth of Sarah Ann Hall Brown in 1853. Family legend is that Joseph's wife, Mary Ann Hall nee Hough agreed to bring up Sarah Ann on the condition that her hair was red like Joseph, which it was.

When Sarah Ann died, aged 26, one of her two young children (Joseph Hall Cresswell) was brought up by Joseph's wife Mary Ann Hall. The other brother remained with his father.

Joseph Hall Cresswell (1848-1920) was very close to Mary Ann Hall and when she died (her husband having pre-deceased her) she left the bulk of her estate to Joseph Hall Cresswell.
