John Burling was baptized on 12 Feb 1656/57 at the Church of Saint Margaret in Barking, Essex, England, a son of Edward Burling and Katherine Bowler. He was a Quaker and his occupation was wheelwright, like his father, Edward, and brothers, Edward and Elias.
John emigrated to America in 1680, settling first on Long Island. He later moved to Burlington County, West Jersey (in present-day New Jersey). John married Sarah Paxson in 1692.
In his will dated 30 May 1702, John mentioned his brother Elias Burling and his nephew Edward Burling, son of his deceased brother Edward Burling. John died in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania on 9 Jun 1702 and he was buried the following day in Germantown. His widow Sarah married second, James Kirkham.
