His mother died at Colfax when he was only 3 years old.
Dad entered the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, Wash., in February 1943. He went overseas in World War II with the 76th Infantry Division. He was given the nickname "Cowboy," which he loved. He was wounded in action in Germany on March 6, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents; brother Oran Burnam; sisters Agnes McGill and Mary Kokta; and son-in-law John Mattoon.
