Margaret Burnet or Burnett (1851–1898) was the daughter of James Burnett (1815–1895) and his wife, Catherine Abel (1829–1889). She was born on 27 November 1851, probably at Buxburn [Bucksburn] in the Aberdeenshire parish of Newhills and was baptised in the parish on 31 December 1851.[1] The entry in the baptismal register was as follows (spelling and punctuation as in the original):
“Baptism Register of Newhills / 1851 […] Burnet / December 31 / James Burnet in Buxburn had a daughter born of his wife Catharine Abel 27 Novr. baptized 31 Decr. and named Margaret before witnesses William Abel in Buxburn and John Abel in Greenburn.”[2]
She appears to have left her job working in a paper mill to marry a widower, Alexander P Thow, who was working as a fireman in a soap works. The marriage took place on 27 February 1892 at what was likely to be her parents' home at Market Street in Woodend in the parish of Newhills.[3] They had at least one child, Jessie Burnett Thow, who was born that year.[4]
Margaret died from miliary tuberculosis on 12 April 1898 at 102 High Street in the Old Aberdeen registration district.[5]
