Biography

The Burnett family is a researcher's nightmare, with every generation repeating the names of the previous generation-- and in every branch of the tree. A great granddaughter of Jerimiah, June Baldwin Bork, set out to straighten out the vast confusion of names in 3 volumes, called The Burnetts and Their Connections, (1989).

Naturally, the free biography she wrote for Jeremiah Burnett III at Find A Grave is less detailed. And for whatever reason she left the original, wrong dates intact on the site. But she explains that early researchers, including, apparently, the ones who commissioned the tombstone and created the Find A Grave profile of JB 3, conflated 3 generations of Jeremiah Burnetts. The information that follows is an interpretation of June Bork's Find A Grave biography of Jeremiah Burnett III, with additional information from FamilySearch. Anyone with access to June Bork's book or other sources is encouraged to add information -- and cite it!-- where appropriate below.

Jeremiah Burnett, III, called Jeremiah Santee Burnett at FamilySearch, (1761-1848) was born to Jeremiah Burnett II (1740-1815) and an unknown mother (FamilySearch has Elizabeth Claybrook with unknown Burnett father) in Albemarle, Virginia, in 1761. Jeremiah 2 died in Wayne, Kentucky. His grandfather, Jeremiah Burnett 1, wife unknown, was born in 1718 and died in Virginia.

Jeremiah's father, JB2 (1740-1815)-- not this Jeremiah-- served in the US Revolutionary War, enlisting in Virginia.[1] JB3 was only 15 in 1776.

Marriage

JB3 married Epiphania "Effaniah" or "Effie" Crowley c.1790.[2]

Children of the marriage:

  1. John Burnett
  2. Jeremiah [IV] of Patrick Co., VA.
  3. Samuel Burnett of Bates Co., MO.
  4. Isham Burnett (1795-1848) of Johnson Co., MO.
  5. Elizabeth Nash of Appanoose Co., Iowa.
  6. Rhoda Harris (1800-1878) of Jackson Co., MO.
  7. Judith Burnett Johnson Shepherd of Jackson Co., MO
  8. Nancy Reynolds of Johnson Co., MO.
Effania died in Patrick County Virginia, and Jeremiah remarried to Jane Turner, who also died in Patrick County, but was childless.

Residence

1776: Virginia [1]
1820: Patrick, Virginia, United States [3]

After the death of his second wife, c.1820 he and several family members joined the Westward Migration. Jeremiah's family settled in Missouri.

Death

Jeremiah Burnett died in Blue Springs, Jackson, Missouri, in June 1848.[2]
