IMMIGRATION. 1855. On the MARIA HAY. The MARIA HAY departed Southampton on May 16, 1855 and arrived at the Port of Geelong on August 17, 1855.
(1855). LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Immigrants for Gipps Land.—The authorities at the Immigration Depot have received instructions to transmit a number of the inmates of the establishment to Port Albert, Gipps Land, the Police Magistrate in that district having advised tho Government to effect that remunerative employment was readily attainable there. The emigrants will consist of volunteers who are desirous of trying their fortunes in the less settled districts ; and they will be provided for on a similar system to that adopted at the depot here, until they shall have succeeded in obtaining employment. For this purpose suitable premises have been procured for the accommodation of the newcomers. Somewhat more than 100 have volunteered to try their fortune in this venture, about 50 of whom are married couples, and the remainder single girls. The adventurers start this morning in the "Storm Bird" for Alberton, where we wish them every success. — Geelong Advertiser.
(1855). FEMALE IMMIGRATION.—The present state of the immigration department is as favorable as could be expected after the recent shipment of 180 females, per Maria Hay, most of whom have been distributed to private service, and a few discharged to their resident relations. On the 25th August, a draft of 100 women was forwarded to Alberton, Gipps Land, on board the Storm Bird, under charge of a Government officer, and the surgeon of the vessel. Upon landing at their destination, they will come under the superintendence and protection of the local Stipendiary Magistrate ; and, as late advices report that there prevails a heavy demand for female domestics in that district, there can be no doubt the woman will soon find eligible service.

My mother's paternal line was Burnetts in the US from colonial eras. They became scrappers and slave holders, but that is at least partly why the line continued here. My middle birth name was Burnett. It's legally my surname.
