Henrietta was born sometime between 1804 and 1816. She was the 2nd daughter of John Burnett and Penelope Hayes.
She was born in Scotland and spent her early childhood there before the family moved to the Isle of Man around 1819.[1]
In March 1826 her father was appointed the first Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen's Land. John took his wife and 9 children on the long journey to the other side of the world arriving on 22 November 1826.[2]
In 1830 Henrietta married Major Sholto Douglas,[3] a distant relative of the Marquis of Queensberry. They had a son, Edward in 1831.[4]
The family moved between Van Diemen's Land and the British Isles 3 times over the next 7 years, with the Major's health failing.
Tragically, Major Douglas passed away on the Isle of Man in December 1838 leaving Henrietta a widow with a young son (though certainly with a powerful and wealthy family).
In 1844 Henrietta was living in Calcutta, India, where she married another military man, Lt-Col Ferdinand White of the 40th Regiment.[5]
She passed away in 1859.
